Bum Fun GTA Playlists – An Introduction

Welcome to Bum Fun!

Bum Fun provides GTA Online participants with the following:
1. New challenges and experiences for experienced members of the GTA racing community
2. A safe, fun, relaxed, humour-filled space for all participants (without being anal about political correctness)
3. A low pressure opportunity for beginners to learn the rules and skills involved in GTA “clean racing”. This includes more frequent opportunities to improve less commonly utilized skills
4. No need to own a specific vehicle
5. No technical requirements for participation, other than owning the game. No need to lock your frame rate or anything like that, and no spreadsheets required! (Don’t use mods)
6. Opportunities to play new fun (meme) races and minigames, created by BumB0i. These races and minigames are primarily designed for racers in mind. The majority of them involve controlling some sort of vehicle, and are enjoyable for participants at all skill levels
7. An open invite and opportunity to become involved in the GTA racing community, and to expand existing relationships within the community
8. A non-crew centric culture. You don’t need to be part of a specific crew to participate, and there is no pressure to join any specific crew. (Crews are welcome to participate as an entity, e.g. teams tend to be assigned to minigames based upon their signed-in crew. Bum can recommend crews based on his experience, but he encourages Bum Fun participants to engage with the wider GTA racing community)

Playlist Structure

Bum Funs playlists are normally comprised of the following, in this order:
5 to 9 clean races
3 to 5 fun (meme) races
3+ minigames

Bum Fun “clean” races are a mixture of good cars on unusual tracks; bad cars on known tracks; and relief races (sensible car and track combinations). At least one of these tracks will be selected to exploit the “unique attributes” (bad handling and glitches) of specific cars. For example, the Swinger is a known “shit-box” on bumpy circuits, and the Mamba is a known nightmare to drive in the wet. As such, you’ll sometimes end up driving the Swinger at bumpy circuits, and the Mamba in the wet! Normal clean racing rules apply, but participants are encouraged to be forgiving and tolerant of mistakes.

When Bum Funs reach the “fun” stage, things become more silly! Most of the fun races are ramming races, where the normal clean racing rules don’t apply! Unless otherwise advised, weapons are not allowed, nor is the “single player stop” allowed. In Missile Carnage races, they are basically a grittier take on Mario Kart. These races can sometimes frustrate people. Keep in mind that these races aren’t supposed to be taken seriously, and that by participating you are helping others to have a good time!

Bum Fun minigames are specifically selected with racers in mind. They almost always feature some form of vehicle (usually a car or truck), and are designed to be easily accessible and enjoyable. Participants with lower levels of non-driving skills or experience can engage fully with these minigames, because they normally don’t provide higher skilled participants with an excessive advantage. E.g. you’ll be dealing with weapons like Atomizers, not sniper rifles. Most of these minigames are made by BumB0i (published under his RugMunch3r account). They often provide unique experiences, usually with a bizarre or humorous twist!

Playlist Culture and Principles

In principle, Bum Fun is open to anybody capable of having fun! In reality, experience or a willingness to learning how to race cleanly (i.e. not causing crashes and upsetting people) is essential. People with previous sim racing experience should find this straightforward. Similarly, people with offline sim racing experience tend to adapt quickly to racing in GTA Online. Regardless, there is no requirement or expectation of talent, skill or experience. If you are having fun and not causing too much grief on-track, you’ll be fine! For competitive racers, winning Bum Funs is a genuine achievement. Many of our participants are experienced, talented members with competitive achievements in GTA racing leagues and events. With that said, winning shouldn’t be your primary motivation for participation in Bum Fun. Part of the appeal of Bum Fun is its non-serious, pressure free environment. If you can’t have fun without winning, “You’re gonna have a bad time!”

In Bum Fun sessions, our vibe underpins the playlists. As such, we actively maintain a friendly, positive and humorous environment. In-session moderation is provided in a positive manner, and focused on educating participants (as opposed to threatening them). As a general rule, we don’t tolerate hostile, offensive, highly disruptive or repeatedly consistently negative behaviour.

Participants are strongly encouraged to join the playlist’s voice chat server, even if they don’t have a mic.
Because we emphasize positivity and humour, being in voice chat adds to your enjoyment of the sessions. It also makes communication easier, and helps avoids to avoid misunderstandings (i.e. you’ll “read the room” better). To receive an invite to our Discord server, message BumB0i or any other server member.

Participants should also take the realities of GTA’s physics and network model into account. For example, if someone has a bit of lag, don’t follow the rear corner of their car too closely through tight turns. The game can misjudge the real distance between your vehicle and theirs, leading to the other person’s computer thinking you “rammed” them. By the same token, lagging races should avoid making sudden or aggressive moves; provide extra space when alongside other participants. With that said, if a participant complains too much about it, or treats a lagging participant with disrespect or aggression, they (the complainer) will be removed from the session. Participants with highly inconsistent lag will be removed from sessions.

The following video refers to skiing, but it summarizes the basic expectations and vibe of Bum Fun. (A few highlights from the video for new racers: If you are new, take your time. Watch out for the other racers, and give them space. If you don’t know your car well, brake early and drive cautiously!)

Playlist Rules
  • Bum Fun races are both fun and competitive, with an emphasis on fun! We all like to win, but our in-session culture and vibe is what matters most! Participants are strongly encouraged to “look after each other”, irrespective of whoever would win a “judicial review” of a potential incident. (In other words, participants will inevitably fuck up. Do your best to minimize the carnage, even if it means losing positions!)
  • Aggressive, hostile, excessively negative and disrespectful participants will be removed from the session. This includes anybody that consistently doesn’t look out for their fellow participants
  • WE SELECT “GTA” RACE MODE TO ENABLE CAR SHARING. DO NOT USE WEAPONS!
  • ALWAYS “WAIT AT START”. KEEP THE FIRST TWO ROWS OF THE GRID CLEAR. You can grid up anywhere from the third row onwards, even ten cars wide if you can make it fit! Keep a lane clear down both sides of the grid
  • BEFORE EACH RACE, THE ALLOWED CARS WILL BE PASTED INTO IN-GAME CHAT. (Bum uses APEX car groups – join their Discord server for more info)
  • CAR SHARING IS PROVIDED AT ALL RACES
    • (except in tire wear races – can’t enable car sharing mode)If you don’t own one of the allowed cars, you can borrow one off somebody else. When selecting a car from your garage, pick something slower than the allowed cars
    • CAR SHARING PROCEDURE: Before doing anything else, both drivers need to get into the other driver’s vehicle! When both drivers are in each others vehicles, the owner of the shared (donor) car needs to respawn. The owner will then respawn in a duplicate of their own vehicle, and the other person’s original car will despawn
    • Note: Refusing to share is considered to be impolite, and commonly associated with cheating. You still get to drive your own vehicle, and it’s not as though winning a Bum Fun leads to FIA Super License eligibility
  • WHEN RE-ENTERING THE TRACK AFTER AN ACCIDENT, IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO RE-ENTER THE TRACK SAFELY! Don’t enter the track if it will impede approaching cars. Stay off the main racing line until your car is back up to speed
